The new cheap Kia EV3 and EV4 vehicles are already in production, after the brand's first EV plant renovation. Once operational, the factory will solely produce EVs, including Kia's new entry-level vehicles.
Kia EV3 and EV4 ready for production
After an extensive eight-month overhaul, Kia's manufacturing plant in Gwangmyeong is set to recommence operations next month. The facility, previously responsible for producing Pride and Stonic vehicles, has been restructured to focus on manufacturing Kia's next-generation electric vehicles (EVs). The revamped plant is poised to have a production capacity of 150,000 EVs annually, encompassing the production of the new EV3 and EV4 models.
Although a Hyundai Motor official has confirmed this development, specific details were not disclosed. The official did mention, "The smaller EV3 and EV4 will diversify Kia’s current EV lineups." These compact EV models will join Kia's existing EV lineup, which includes the EV5, EV6, and flagship EV9, as part of the automaker's expanding electric vehicle offerings.
According to the official, the smaller EV models are anticipated to be more budget-friendly than the EV6, providing a broader range of choices for customers. Reports from South Korea suggest that the pricing for Kia's EV3 and EV4 is expected to be around 40 million won ($29,900) and 30 million won ($22,500), respectively.
After the upgrade, the plant will become Hyundai Motor's inaugural production site exclusively dedicated to electric vehicles (EVs). Kia's CEO, Song Ho-sung, announced that the facility will incorporate the latest manufacturing technologies developed by Hyundai Motor's new innovation center in Singapore.
These advancements encompass artificial intelligence (AI), robotics (including robotic dogs), data-driven operating systems, and more. The implementation of these cutting-edge technologies is anticipated to significantly enhance product quality, with a stated goal of achieving a 95% pass rate on quality tests during the manufacturing process.
What we know so far about Kia’s new EVs
Kia unveiled three new cars during its inaugural EV day in October. It revealed that the EV5 will cost about $35,000 and compete with the Volvo EX30, which has a CLTC range of up to 447 miles (720 kilometers). The base model is projected to include up to 330 miles (530 km) range.
The occasion saw the introduction of two new electric concepts: the EV3 and the EV4. The EV3 is an electric crossover that incorporates the design, functionality, and technology of the EV9 into a smaller package.
Kia's new "Opposites United" design reflects the EV9's impact. As part of Kia's rebranding, the new EV has a revamped Tiger Face.
The interior is versatile, with numerous alternative "modes" for adjusting the arrangement. Various modes include concentrate, social, renewing, and storage.
Meanwhile, Kia describes the EV4 as a "entirely new type of electric sedan." It has an eco-friendly interior and two digital displays for a minimalist aesthetic.
We will hear more about the vehicles as they approach production later this year. Check back for additional information.
