Fresh off being China's best-selling brand, BYD has (briefly) added a new small SUV to its Yuan family of EVs, which was one of the largest contributors to overall sales last year. From what we've seen so far, the Yuan Up appears to be little but formidable, with some of BYD's greatest technology - all at an estimated beginning price that will interest customers.

If you read Electrek often, you may have noticed an increase in news coverage of China's Build Your Dreams (BYD) initiative during the last year. In recent months, the auto company has made significant progress toward becoming a household name, releasing an increasing number of EVs in new countries across Europe.

By December, we predicted that BYD will eventually overtake Tesla as the worldwide EV market leader, which it accomplished. We announced this morning that BYD has been named the best-selling brand in its home China, dethroning Volkswagen Group's 15-year rule.

It's not just the velocity at which BYD is expanding that's intriguing to watch, but the sheer diversity of options, all at different price points but all equipped with great EV technology, that has truly made this firm stand out.

Today, we learnt that BYD's EV portfolio has a new member, the Yuan Up, which joins a popular family of vehicles that have previously helped it achieve the sales titles listed above. This compact SUV appears to have wide market appeal as a tiny but spacious EV that is reasonably priced for customers.

BYD introduces “new little friend” to Yuan family

The photographs above appeared in a Weibo post from BYD Auto earlier today, accompanying the following caption (translated from Chinese):

Xiao Yuan, attack!

The Yuan family’s new little friend
#UP is coming, so stay tuned!

The Up will be a tiny SUV variation in the BYD Yuan family, starting with a subcompact crossover in the company's "Dynasty Series." The Yuan has now been joined by the Yuan Pro and Yuan Plus, sometimes known as the Atto 3, in various areas, including Europe.

CnEVPost reports that the Yuan family sold 428,580 units in 2023, accounting for 14% of BYD Auto's total sales. When it arrives, BYD claims that the Yuan Up will be the first A0-class SUV on their e-Platform 3.0, which launched in 2021 and currently supports other branded EVs like as the Dolphin.

While BYD has yet to reveal the Up's dimensions, regulatory documents indicate it would be larger than the Dolphin EV but with a somewhat shorter wheelbase. Given that the Yuan Up is in the same SUV class and size range as its Dolphin sister, we expect pricing to be comparable.

In China, the BYD Dolphin costs between RMB 116,800 ($16,465) and RMB 139,800 ($19,700). However, the Yuan Up is projected to maintain a similar price range of RMB 100,000 ($14,100) to RMB 150,000 ($21,150).

We're likely to discover more once BYD officially exposes the Yuan Up to the public and begins pre-orders.
