Caterpillar has successfully demonstrated a prototype of an all-new battery electric underground mining truck at its Australian proving grounds. This marks Caterpillar's entry into the realm of battery-electric underground mining vehicles and is part of its growing portfolio of electric and semi-autonomous mining machines. The prototype truck, visually similar to the existing AD45 articulated hauler, was developed with customer input and support from Newmont Corporation, with the goal of helping Newmont achieve a fully connected, automated, and zero-carbon mining system. Caterpillar has been actively expanding its range of electric mining equipment, including the introduction of its above-ground electric mining truck in 2022.

“This milestone is a reflection of the partnership between our teams at Newmont and Caterpillar, showcasing the impact of strong collaboration in the mining industry,” said Rob Atkinson, Executive Vice President at Newmont. “Achieving this milestone together, combining capabilities and shared values, is a testament to the strength of our strategic alliance.”
Caterpillar's upcoming battery-electric truck represents the second half of its first fully electric underground load and haul solution. The first half is the R1700 XE battery-electric loader, which was showcased at CES and is currently available for order. Caterpillar's move towards electric mining vehicles is part of its commitment to providing more sustainable choices for the underground mining industry. The company aims to address safety concerns associated with moving large machinery in underground spaces by introducing emissions-free, autonomous, and automated solutions. Denise Johnson, Caterpillar's Resource Industries Group President, sees this as a milestone in collaboration with Newmont to enhance sustainability in underground mining.
